Jennifer Lee ‘26 - Business Analytics & Product Management Internship at Elevance Health

Jennifer

This summer, I worked as an IT Business Analyst Intern at Elevance Health in Norfolk, VA. Elevance Health is a major American health insurer that strives to improve the health of humanity on a holistic level. Some key themes from my summer of personal and professional growth include embracing change, thinking critically, and staying curious, where I have been challenged to view shifts in direction as opportunities for momentum, explore different angles with creativity, and dive into new topics.

I worked predominantly with the Digital Clinical Product team under Utilization Management in Elevance Health’s technology division. One of my key projects in digital product management included a deep dive into AI modernization of a medical case summary platform. I developed a data-driven business case that projects at least a 15% reduction in medical case review time, over 12,000 hours saved annually, and a $2.5 million return on investment. I got to collaborate with clinicians, product managers, engineers, data teams, and many others to research, design, develop, and test technical products. My work lays the foundation for more streamlined patient care.

While the numbers alone tell a story, the process to achieve them was equally significant. Initially, the plan seemed straightforward: research opportunities, gather data, analyze the data, and create, test, and revise a solution. However, I soon realized that progress involves continuous adaptation while keeping the end goal in mind. Whether it was unexpected user feedback, missing data, or shifting business priorities, these challenges required me to reassess the landscape and develop alternative approaches. Ultimately, due to a variety of complex considerations and data-driven insights, I also realized that a change in the implementation timeline of my business case would bring the most value.

As I reflect, I see three themes with greater clarity:

First, change is inevitable. But how we adapt and problem-solve around those changes is what determines our success. Sometimes, problem-solving may look like shifting priorities and acknowledging short-term delays to focus on the big picture.

Second, perspective guides problem-solving. Engaging with individuals from diverse industries, backgrounds, and experiences brought color to my understanding and enriched my problem-solving approach.

Last but not least, curiosity drives growth. By taking initiative to connect with others and ask questions, I got to dive into topics like AI, Agile product management, LeanUX, corporate finance, and the global business landscape beyond what's possible in the classroom or online.

I am so thankful for everyone involved for the incredible guidance and continued support. I’m excited to carry these lessons and experiences into my junior year at Duke University and beyond, as I strive to make a lasting impact in healthcare, technology, and business.
