Who Should Apply?

The SPIRE Fellows Program is an academic support system with the mission to provide support for students who are underrepresented in STEM disciplines. We welcome all first-year undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing studies in STEM fields.

*Due to the outstanding support system already in place through our PreHeath Advising Program, prehealth students will not be considered for placement in SPIRE.*

SPIRE Application:

The online application consists of the following questions:

  • In SPIRE, our paths all share one common thread: a genuine curiosity and passion for science. We’d love to hear about what sparked your interest in STEM, and what you hope to pursue with it – both during your time at Duke and beyond? (limit answer to 250 words or less).
  • Describe a time you felt challenged/discouraged. What helped you move forward, and what did you learn about yourself? (limit answer to 250 words or less)?
  • What excites you about joining the SPIRE Fellows community? How might you grow from becoming a member—and how might you contribute to our community? (limit answer to 250 words or less).
  • SPIRE’s mission is to foster equity and broaden participation in STEM by supporting students who have historically faced barriers to access, inclusion, or opportunity in STEM disciplines. Please describe why these goals are important to you and how you would contribute to this mission. (limit answer to 250 words or less).
  • Are you applying for or are you already involved in another program which will require a significant time commitment? Examples include: Focus, ROTC, varsity athletics, or a merit scholarship program. If yes, please indicate the program(s):
