Mission
Duke SPIRE Fellows is an innovative and responsive program centering inclusivity, retention, and success typically underrepresented students in STEM disciplines. Our goal is to attract and mentor students from diverse backgrounds who otherwise may not have chosen to engage in a major or career in STEM. Through targeted programming, support, and the creation of a diverse STEM learning community and network, we have retained all fellows since SPIRE’s inaugural year.
Vision
Duke SPIRE Fellows is a learning community and network. SPIRE Fellows engage science, technology, engineering, and math through various pathways. Duke SPIRE pathways foster innovative thinking and problem solving, while enhancing STEM research readiness and involvement, and encouraging excellence and retention for individuals typically underrepresented across STEM areas of study. Duke SPIRE cultivates a positive learning experience, thereby preparing such students for graduate studies and/or careers in STEM fields.
