Dr. Hogan grew up in New Jersey where she attended public schools from kindergarten through college. She earned a B.S. in Biology from the College of New Jersey. She was interested in medicine, but didn’t want to be a physician, so she attended a PhD program in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine studying blood clotting. As a post-doctoral fellow, she studied the development of blood vessels and but also explored college teaching opportunities. She’s always loved teaching, whether it be teaching piano to kids, tutoring peers in chemistry in college, mentoring undergrads in the lab, or encouraging hundreds of college students to persist in introductory biology courses. Dr. Hogan has mentored in many different programs and sees mentoring as a win for both her and students. She likes to help students make new connections, while getting to know their individual stories and history. In turn, she says getting to know a diversity of people makes her a better teacher and mentor to others.
