Fun Fact

I like to play drums and marimba.

My interest in STEM started from a young age with my curiosity about my father’s job as a chemical engineer. This interest grew throughout high school, where I joined multiple groups that were centered around the science and math fields while also incorporating leadership roles. During high school, I attempted to take as many classes in the different STEM fields to figure out where my main interest lay and have continued to do this now in college. My research experience currently only spans over the night labs in my AP biology and chemistry classes, but I hope to change this throughout my years at Duke. Outside of the classroom, I have always had a deep passion for music. From piano in elementary school to percussion in my high school band, I have always played music in some form. I have continued this by joining the band at Duke, where I currently play the snare drum in drumline. I hope to join more organizations as I interact with the community Duke SPIRE creates and learn about the many other organizations that others with similar interests have joined.

I had always known that I wanted to emulate what my father did as an engineer but was not sure which engineering path I would like to take. I decided to go with biomedical engineering because I saw it as an opportunity to combine two interests of mine, medicine and engineering, while also incorporating multiple STEM fields including biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Although I am not completely sure on the specific path I would like to take with this major, I hope that it will involve giving back to the community in some way and helping progress the STEM fields. With the future I create myself, I hope that I will be happy and continuously engaged with what I study and that I am constantly learning and applying my knowledge in order to benefit others.

What do you like about being a SPIRE Fellow?

I like that SPIRE provides its members with multiple resources which we can take advantage of and creates a great community of students with similar interests that can collaborate together. The mentors will also provide us with guidance as we continue throughout college and look for potential research opportunities.
