Physics & Math
I can solve a Rubik’s cube in 30 seconds.
I enjoy tabletop games, listening to music, working out, solving puzzles, Sudoku and hanging out with friends. I am part of Sabrosura, Duke’s Premiere Latin Dance group. In the same way, I am involved with Mi Gente, a student organization with the objective of strengthening the Latino community. I am also involved with Duke AERO, Duke's Premier High Power Rocketry Team. Inside the classroom, I am passionate about upper-level Mathematics and Physics. Outside the classroom, I care about my physical and mental health which gives me the energy to go workout. In the same way, I love connecting with my friends after class and checking how everyone’s day was. My love for mathematics began in my first competition, where I discovered excitement in every challenge.
Growing up in Cuba, I spent nights stargazing on my rooftop, captivated by the mysteries of the universe. Astrophysics perfectly unites these passions: the logic of math and the wonder of space. At Duke, I hope to deepen my research skills and advocate for greater Hispanic representation in STEM. In the future, I aim to work at NASA or SpaceX and create an organization that inspires Hispanic youth to see themselves as future scientists exploring the stars.
What excites me most about being a SPIRE Fellow is that it offers more than academic support, it offers a family. As a first‑generation college student and immigrant, I’ve faced the challenges of navigating a new academic environment while overcoming a language barrier. Because of these experiences, I deeply value the kind of community that SPIRE creates, where students uplift and encourage one another through both their successes and their struggles.
SPIRE provides the guidance and resources I need to thrive at Duke, from mentorship and one‑on‑one tutoring to opportunities for personal growth. Knowing that I can rely on others who understand my journey helps me approach challenges with confidence and perseverance. Having learned the value of perseverance, I want to remind others that they are not alone and that their goals are within reach. Whether it’s through study sessions or words of encouragement, I hope to help others believe in themselves. For me, SPIRE is not just a program but a community where we grow, succeed, and lift each other up.
