I am very passionate about environmentalism.
My name is Rebecca Schmitt. I'm a sophomore studying mechanical engineering. I am from Atlanta, Georgia; however, I grew up in sunny South Florida.
I am very passionate about environmentalism. Not long ago, I volunteered at Zoo Atlanta, where I bridged the public with animals and their respective habitats. As a freshman, I was a part of Green Devils East and enacted projects to raise awareness of food-waste habits on campus. I am also involved in the Duke Smart Home community, where I will be on their executive team as the communications director.
I was fortunate enough to be able to research air quality and water quality in Kunshan, China and Durham under Dr. Mike Bergin last spring. The projects that I led aimed to discover a correlation between respiratory health and air-quality, as well as, the difference in particulate matter concentration between Durham, North Carolina and the Shanghai suburb, Kunshan.
This summer, I was able to study abroad in two summer programs: Duke in Italy and Duke in Australia. I can say that both were fantastic learning experiences. My other interests include viewing memes, playing tennis, reading WebToons, and cooking.
I'm looking forward to making this school year great with SPIRE. I am definitely excited to continue participation in this amazing program with a group of like-minded individuals.
