Hi! My name is Junior Bonet and I am currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. Originally from Trenton, New Jersey, I grew up in an environment with several educational challenges, as my school was significantly underfunded and offered few opportunities for academic success. Now at Duke, I channel my passion not only into my studies but also into my work with the Bull City Scholars, a club dedicated to supporting local middle school students in their educational journeys. Through this organization, I mentor students in math, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the subject and fostering a love for learning that I hope will empower them as it did for me. My work with Bull City Scholars is particularly meaningful to me because it allows me to give back to communities similar to the one I grew up in and places where students are often underserved and face educational disparities.
Being a SPIRE fellow reminds me that despite the lack of representation in STEM fields, there is always a community for me. Whenever I get discouraged or when imposter syndrome starts to set in, I can always turn to SPIRE to remind myself that I deserve to be here and that I'm not alone in feeling this!
