Electrical and Computer Engineering & Computer Science
I love cars and watching sports!
Hello, my name is Juan and I am interested in double-majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering & Computer Science. I was born and raised in the Bay Area in a predominantly Hispanic community, and I am pursuing my post-secondary education as a first-generation college student.
Throughout my upbringing, technology and engineering always fascinated me as I often found myself wondering how humanity managed to advance from discovering fire to developing self-driving cars and smartphones? Now, as a student at Duke, I have the opportunity and privilege to explore the questions I've carried with me throughout my life while helping uplift my Hispanic community into the world of STEM.
To take initiative in both my academic exploration and commitment to community, I am a member of Duke AERO, Duke University’s high-powered rocketry group. Within the Avionics sub-team, I help research and develop the Avionics housing and sensor layout. In my engineering design course, I am working in a group of four students tasked by Dean Lynch, to design an attachment for a firehose that allows Naval Firefighters to transmit biometric information between an external control center and the firefighters on the line of duty. These experiences have expanded my understanding of how engineering development and real world applications intersect to create innovations that benefit humanity.
Outside of the classroom, I am dedicated to using technology, my education, and my community to develop an online platform that offers legal, financial, and educational resources to the Hispanic community. I hope to continue building on this platform as I expand my technical skillset during my time at Duke.
As a new member of the SPIRE Fellows, I am very excited to meet curious and likeminded people. I hope to learn so much from peers and from SPIRE itself.
“As a SPIRE Fellow, I enjoy being surrounded by people from diverse backgrounds who come together to help one another discover their passions and aspirations as we navigate this new chapter of our lives. I look forward to interacting with the Fellows and learning more about each other.”
