Potential Major: Chemistry Potential Minor: African and African American Studies Potential certificate: Innovation & Entrepreneurship
I spent two weeks in Tanzania during summer 2018 on a leadership and service trip.
The best word used to describe me is deliberate. I am patient, and I make conscious decisions to get out of my comfort zone. I am guilty of overthinking and being indecisive because like to explore every option available. I am also a creative thinker and I like to come up with new and novel ways to do things. My Myers-Briggs personality type is INFP.
Currently, I am planning to declare a major in Chemistry with a minor in African and African American studies, but those are subject to change. My interests in chemistry are in pharmacology, toxicology, and biochemistry. I also have interests in Pan-Africanism and starting a business centered around wellness. I am undecided about what I want to do after I graduate, but I am contemplating going to graduate school. Wherever I end up, I hope to be making a positive impact on other lives.
Outside of the classroom and the SPIRE Fellowship, I volunteer with the Future is Now youth mentorship program where I engage with young Black and Latina girls in activities centered around women’s empowerment. I also receive mentorship from the Polished Pebbles program. In the 2017-2018 school year, I worked as a Marketing Intern in the Office of Undergraduate Education. In the summer of 2018, I worked as a tour guide for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. I am also involved with the Representing Migrations Humanities Lab with the Marcus Garvey Team.
Starting in fall 2018 I will be Peer Advisor for first-year students and a visual content creator for an online publication called The Bridge.
In my free time, I like to take naps, meditate, draw, create music playlists, and excessively watch movies and videos online.
The SPIRE program is staffed by wonderful people who are truly invested in the success and wellbeing of their fellows. I love how open Dean Blackshear and Dean Wood-Crowley are to help us get access to the STEM opportunities and resources that we need/want. It is also great that they are warm, kind, open to feedback, and willing to give us what we want out of this program.
