Fun Fact

I know almost everything anyone could possibly know about the Harry Potter world.

When I was in the fifth grade, I had the opportunity of being a part of a new program that was designed for helping foster a love of science through hands-on experiments and group work in preparation of the science FCAT and marks my first connection for STEM. Since that moment, I knew that a career in the STEM field was the only place I’ve ever seen myself being a part of. Before coming to Duke, I’ve volunteer at the same program that’s connected me to my love of science and teaching and has shaped my entire education experience since. I went to a STEM Magnet high school and explored a variety of STEM courses and so far have decided that psychology and chemistry are my major passions, with the hopes of creating another program, similar to the one I was honored to be involved in, and have in on a bigger scale to foster the same love for service, community, and STEM that happened to me at a younger age and diversify the STEM field in the way I hope to as a low-income, first-generation African-American female.

What do you like about being a SPIRE Fellow?

I was drawn to SPIRE by the desire I felt to be connected with a group of other students who are interested in the same subjects I am interested in. I love the community support system I receive and the resources and opportunities that are available to me since joining the SPIRE Fellows program.
