Fun Fact

I can juggle!

My love for STEM developed from a young age as I moved around the world. Although languages changed and cultures shifted, math and science remained the same-universally applicable and endlessly fascinating. The systematic approach and sense of fulfillment led to my passion for the hard sciences. As a kid, I often reached for math pages instead of novels, though I do have a soft spot for history, especially anything related to Napoleon.

While I am still keeping my mind open to other academic areas, I will most likely pursue a degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Pharmacology. My interest in pharmaceutical science began when I first saw the hit drama series _Breaking Bad_, which introduced me to the chemical side of drug development. Unlike Walter White, I aspire to legally work in a lab to research and develop drugs in an effort to advance modern medicine. Ideally, I would like to focus on advancing women’s health and bringing healthcare to underserved communities impacted by unethical medical practices.

Growing up around the world has taught me that humans are more alike than we are different. Social constructs should never be obstacles to progress, especially when injury and disease recognize neither race nor religion. In this era of globalization, it is incredibly important that we use our resources to share knowledge and collaborate effectively across borders. We have endless opportunities to make real differences and ultimately save lives.

As a freshman at Duke University, I am involved with the Black Student Association, where serve on BSA’s publicity committee designing flyers and create engaging content to promote diversity on campus. It is very important to me to cultivate a culture of Black excellence through academic enrichment and strong community ties. I also volunteer as a student-manager for Duke Softball, supporting the Division 1 team during practices, games, and other events.

What do you like about being a SPIRE Fellow?

I enjoy being around like-minded students with similar interests. In a campus with thousands of undergraduates, it is easy to feel lost. As a SPIRE Fellow, I have found a supportive community that fosters lasting bonds while sharing common experiences.
