Computer Science & Statistics
I have kept a journal of every dream I could remember since 2023!
Hey everyone, my name is Adalo Gusa! I am a freshman studying Computer Science and Statistics from Durham, NC. From a young age, I discovered that I thrive within communities. I come from a diverse family with many different ethnicities, religions, and beliefs. Navigating different environments growing up taught me the importance of diversity, learning others' perspectives, and connecting with people who may not share the same interests as me. I was fortunate to be surrounded by community and mentorship through my karate dojo, various schools, BOOST at Duke(STEM program for underrepresented Durham students), and the greater Durham area. This is why one of my biggest motivations to stay in Durham was to stick with my long-term commitments and give back to the communities that shaped me as a person and leader I am today.
Along my journey in academics, I was exposed to the world of computer science through a program at Duke called CS Sidekicks(A former SPIRE fellow actually cofounded this program!), and instantly fell in love. I describe coding as learning a language. Once you become fluent, the extent of what you can do is only limited by your imagination! With my background in CS, I created a web application titled Student Sharpens Student, seeking to connect school communities, which I am planning on releasing at Duke. My current involvements include being a SPIRE fellow, Duke National Society of Black Engineers first-year leader, Catalyst Tech Society, and BOOST at Duke. Professionally, I am still discovering my space within Computer Science, although I am leaning toward software development. My goals right now include maintaining my GPA, having a successful year working as a coach at BOOST, and taking advantage of all opportunities at Duke!
I enjoy being a SPIRE fellow because of the vibrant students and advisors who make up the program. I have already met amazing people, been connected with academic opportunities, and received great advice on how to manage my time at Duke. One of my biggest motives for applying to SPIRE was to find a community and support system of people to experience my undergraduate with. I am looking forward to moving into Craven Quad next year and sharing my journey with everyone else in the fellowship!
