A clinical psychologist by training, Dr. Blackshear holds his doctorate in clinical psychology from Georgia State University, and a masters in community/clinical psychology as well as a B.S. in psychology from Florida A&M University. Dr. Blackshear is the Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, Dean of Students and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs. Dr. Blackshear teaches forensic psychology as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, and lives with his family in Trinity Residence Hall as a faculty-in-residence.
Dr. Blackshear was integral in creating the SPIRE Fellows Program. He was the first Co-Director along with Dr. Jenny Wood Crowley. SPIRE was created because Blackshear grew tired of seeing gifted students, particularly underrepresented populations, shut out of STEM by introductory classes at Duke. He believes in taking talent and producing brilliant students, focusing on excellence, not reputation or selectivity. Dr. Blackshear is an avid music lover and also plays the drums, he loves to travel and spend quality time with his wife, Kimberly and his six beautiful children.
